The Bob Huggins era in Morgantown is over. A recent DUI arrest was the final straw for West Virginia, with Huggins announcing his resignation. Huggins has retired as well, stepping away from college basketball after being a head coach for over four decades.

Not everybody is too thrilled with how the Huggins resignation has gone down. His daughter, Jacque, called out University President Gordon Gee and the West Virginia Board for their actions. She claims Huggins could have used some help following his DUI but instead, Gee and the board decided to “turn (their) backs.”

“To Gordon Gee & your board, be better and do better,” Jacque Huggins said in a Facebook post. “Throwing stones at glass houses is also not how to represent such a great University. Treating someone like they don’t matter after they have given their whole heart and soul to your University? You could have helped, but chose to turn your backs. Not only on him, on the guys, the staff, the boosters. Everyone. You’re the classless ones, the cowards, the backstabbers and most of all hypocrites.

“Remember the 24 million dollar practice facility, that was not in anyway funded by the University? The 17 million into your hospitals for cancer research? I can only pray you never make another mistake like you have in the past to be crucified for. Cue Ohio State. Enrollment down 30%, mountains of debt, and too much more to list. Do your job that you were assigned to do and bring WVU back.”

Also in the Facebook post, Jacque Huggins stated her father was “not an alcoholic” and drinks like 90% of us do.” A “mistake” is what cost Huggins his job — one where there was going to be a ton of hype surrounding West Virginia heading into the 2023-2024 season.

Instead, his resignation comes in after the DUI and his homophobic comments made earlier in the year while appearing on a radio show in Cincinnati. Had he not officially resigned, Jacque’s post makes it sound like Bob Huggins would have been fired. Either way, West Virginia was going to be moving in a different direction and looking for a new head coach.

Huggins spent 16 seasons with the Mountaineers, making the NCAA Tournament 11 times. One of the two Final Fours in program history came under Huggins’ watch, occurring during the 2010 tournament. Add in four Sweet 16s and it’s an impressive resume while at one school.
