There are plenty of quarterbacks who decided to enter the transfer portal following the regular season, even ones who seemingly had a starting job. However, one quarterback who didn’t consider entering the portal was West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene.

Green explained that things like NIL didn’t matter to him because West Virginia offers a culture that he loves being a part of and wants to continue to be a part of moving forward.

“I think the fabric of the state was blue collar and a workman’s mentality,” Garrett Greene said. “There’s a lot of parallels between that and my last name in the Greene family. There’s a whole lot of parallels and that’s something I’ve really held onto and I’ve really been proud of the state.”

Garrett Greene has been with West Virginia since the 2020 season. He took a redshirt that season before seeing a good amount of playing time in 2021 and taking over as the starter late during the 2022 season. Then, in 11 games during the 2023 season, Greene threw for 2,178 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also rushed for 708 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season. He did miss one game due to an injury.

Had Greene entered the transfer portal, there would have been opportunities for him. However, he made it clear that he isn’t interested in any opportunity that isn’t with the Mountaineers.

“I wouldn’t want to be quarterback for anyone else,” Greene said. “This is my home and I love it here”

Garrett Greene still has one season of eligibility remaining. In it, he and the Mountaineers will hope to take another step forward and compete in a newly structured Big 12.

To this point in the transfer portal window, 13 players from West Virginia have entered the transfer portal while four new players have committed to transfer to the Mountaineers. In the coming weeks, both of those numbers could potentially grow.

Neal Brown describes the significance of having chance to earn ninth win

West Virginia has a chance to win a ninth game this season in the Mayo Bowl against North Carolina. That’s something that head coach Neal Brown thinks would be a big deal for the Mountaineers.

“I think nine wins is significant,” Brown said. “Won 10 games in ’16. Haven’t gotten to nine since joining the league. Get the second most wins in Big 12, I think that’s significant. We go from 14th, preseason, and we’re going to finish fourth. That’s significant. And then have the opportunity to get to nine wins.”
