West Virginia is expected to start Garrett Greene at quarterback against TCU on Saturday, The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reported Friday. He sat out last week’s game against Texas Tech due to injury.

Greene started WVU’s first three games this season, throwing for 402 yards and four touchdowns in that span. He left the Mountaineers’ victory over Pitt in the Backyard Brawl with an ankle injury and missed the game against Texas Tech as a result.

Neal Brown previously said Garrett Greene wouldn’t start until he’s healthy

West Virginia brings a 3-1 record into Saturday’s matchup against TCU in a make-or-break year for coach Neal Brown. Although Greene was available last week, Brown said he didn’t look like he was able to go during warmups, which led to the decision to start Nicco Marichol in the 20-13 victory.

“[Greene] was available on Saturday, but he did not warm up very well,” Brown said. “He could have been emergency ready, but we’d have had to help him out. I really don’t want to play him until he’s fully healthy. He didn’t make a whole lot of progress from Wednesday to Saturday.

“We’ll see what he has Tuesday and Wednesday [this week]. I really don’t have any more than that. If he can practice full-go on Tuesday and Wednesday, then he’ll play. If he can’t, then it’ll probably be the same, because then that would give him two weeks from Thursday to really get himself healthy.”

Greene found intermittent snaps during his first two years with the Mountaineers. He broke through at the end of last season, throwing for 342 yards and four touchdowns against Oklahoma and Kansas State as he started the final two games of the year in place of JT Daniels. Daniels ended up transferring to Rice, which opened the door for Greene to take the starting job.

However, Brown said he wouldn’t put Greene back out on the field unless he was 100%.

“I want to see if he’s healthy,” Brown said. “It doesn’t matter until he’s healthy. He won’t start unless he can play what his strengths are, which means he can run.”

Greene’s feet might be more dangerous than his arm. In three games, Greene rushed for 105 yards, averaging five yards per carry. He also ran in a touchdown on the ground against Penn State in the season opener.

Kickoff between West Virginia and TCU is set for Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
