On Friday night, West Virginia basketball head coach Bob Huggins was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence in Pittsburgh. On Monday, Pat McAfee gave his thoughts on the situation.

“Obviously, nobody should operating something that can kill people in that state of mind,” McAfee said on an episode of “The Pat McAfee Show.”

The incident

According to the criminal complaint, Huggins blew a .210 blood alcohol content level, over twice the legal limit. Additionally, the 69-year-old coach was found with empty beer cans inside trash bags in the vehicle.

The police report paints an ugly picture.

“Just before 8:30 p.m, Pittsburgh Police from Zone 1 observed a black SUV on Merchant Street off of Ridge Avenue in the middle of the road, blocking traffic. The driver’s side door was open and the vehicle had a flat and shredded tire. Officers directed the male driver on how best to move off the road so they could help with the flat tire. When they observed him having difficulty maneuvering the SUV to allow vehicles to pass, they activated their lights to pull him over. Upon questioning, officers had strong suspicion to believe the male was intoxicated.

They asked him to exit the vehicle to perform standard field sobriety tests, which he failed. The male was placed in custody without incident and transported for further testing.”

Bob Huggins resigns

Huggins’ resignation came the following day.

“My recent actions do not represent the value of the University or the leadership expected in this role. While I have always tried to represent our University with honor, I have let all of you — and myself — down. I am solely responsible for my conduct and sincerely apologize to the University community — particularly to the student-athletes, coaches, and staff in our program. I must do better and I plan to spend the next few months focused on my health and my family so that I can be the person they deserve.”

Pat McAfee’s reaction

Pat McAfee, who punted for West Virginia in college, was clearly disappointed in Huggins’ actions. Specifically, McAfee was upset Huggins hadn’t learned from past mistakes.

“Not his first time. Bob Huggins, after what happened on the radio a couple months ago, has resigned and said he needs to do a better job healing and being a human pretty much. So, now we have no basketball coach,” McAfee said.

Huggins was arrested for a DUI in 2004 when he was the coach at Cincinnati. He resigned from the program in 2005. More recently, Huggins was already in the hot seat after using a homophobic slur on a Cincinnati radio show. He received a three-game suspension for the comments. However, now that punishment is obviously void.

Huggins leaves WVU as the third-winningest coach all-time in Division I with 935 career victories, trailing only Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, both of whom are retired.
