Texas has tried to stop it, but it’s everywhere.

During a fourth quarter Saturday ceremony honoring servicemen and servicewomen at West Virginia’s Milan Puskar Stadium, all of those recognized flashed the “Horns down” sign.

The derogatory hand gesture received a lot of attention this summer when the Big 12 vowed to crack down on its usage. They said in July that players that did it on the field could be subject to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

“If you do a horns down to a Texas player as an opponent, it’s probably going to be a foul,” said Greg Burks, Big 12 officiating coordinator.

“Please all of you note, I said ‘probably,'” he added. “We have to consider intent and consider the situation. We’ll leave it to officials.”

Mountaineers’ bowl chances still alive

West Virginia beat the Longhorns 31-23. Of course, they started the “SEC” chants the Longhorns have so often heard this season.

Texas running back and Alabama transfer Keilan Robinson stepped up in the absence of injured Bijan Robinson with 111 yards and a touchdown on the day. But he was really Texas’ only impressive offensive performer.

West Virginia has a subpar passing defense ranked 99th in the nation in passing efficiency, but Texas could not take advantage of it. They had just 152 passing yards between Hudson Card and Casey Thompson. Thompson’s stat line was particularly bad, as he completed just four of his 14 passes for 29 yards and an interception.

Mountaineers quarterback Jarret Doege had a productive afternoon, completing 27 of his 43 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns.

West Virginia handed Texas their sixth consecutive loss. The Longhorns fell to 4-7, so they will not meet the six-win minimum usually required to make a bowl game.

The Mountaineers are now 5-6, and they will need to beat Kansas next weekend to make the postseason.
