It’s no secret that the college football landscape has changed. It’s simply not the same that it used to be for so long. There’s now a transfer portal with new transfer rules, and student-athletes can now make money from endorsements – something people thought would never happen just a few years back.

College football is a whole different breed now, and teams are having to make the proper navigations in order to remain successful. There’s been many big-name players make stunning transfer decisions and others who have made quite a bit of money with Name, Image and Likeness deals – and there’s plenty of both to come.

One college football program – the Wyoming Cowboys – made a strange move Friday, releasing a statement to their Twitter account pretty much saying that they would be exploring the NCAA Transfer Portal for a quarterback.

“The college football landscape is changing with the one-time transfer rule and NIL,” Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl said. “Our staff anticipated this movement and have a clear vision to navigate these uncharted waters. After a successful early signing day, Cowboy Football will address the need to sign a quarterback via the transfer portal or junior college.

“We believe this is a great opportunity for a transfer quarterback to come in and make an impact on our program. We’ve seen that before when we brought Josh Allen into our program, and we’re excited for the next chapter of Cowboy Football. Go Pokes!”

Wyoming had great success with Josh Allen at quarterback after he transferred into the Cowboys’ program following his time at Reedley College. Allen ended up starting for Wyoming and led it to back-to-back eight-win seasons while throwing for 5,066 yards and 44 touchdowns and rushing for 767 yards and 12 more scores. He was selected as the seventh overall pick by the Buffalo Bills in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Wyoming’s 2021 football season

Wyoming is coming off a 7-6 season in 2021, which was highlighted by a 52-38 win over Kent State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 21.

In terms of the Cowboys’ quarterback situation, they used two different signal-callers – Sean Chambers and Levi Williams. While Chambers played in nine games and threw for 1,125 yards, six touchdowns, and seven interceptions, Williams finished the campaign with 863 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions in eight appearances.

Chambers and Williams have both entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.
