Aaron Rodgers 'not sure' if Packers can put him in position to win MVP again
The Green Bay Packers missed out on the playoffs and thus are already back to the “will they, won’t they” offseason seesaw with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. What the 39-year-old choses for his next chapter will not just shape the franchise, but the division and realistically the entire NFL.
Speaking on the “Pat McAfee Show,” one of his favorite places to opine, Rodgers dove in to his thought process about continuing his career, and where. He wants to be somewhere that he can play at an MVP level — and that place may or may not be Green Bay.
“But, do I still think I can play? Of course. And play at a high level? Yeah. The highest. I think I can win MVP again, with the right situation,” Rodgers said. “The right situation. Is that Green Bay? Or is that somewhere else? I’m not sure. But I don’t think you should shut down any opportunity.”
One reason that could entice Rodgers to stay on with the Packers is getting to play with a certain set of teammates.
It’s become clear from the various things Rodgers has said publicly that there are just some players — for instance, Randall Cobb — that are his guys who he wants to play with.
“A guy like Marcedes Lewis, he’s an important cog in the wheel of the locker room and the momentum of the team. That’s a guy I want to finish my career with,” Rodgers said. “If I’m playing, I want that guy next to me. I want the Randall Cobbs of the world, if he wants to be playing, in my locker room. Guys you can win with. Allen Lazard, Bobby Tonyan, David Bakhtiari. There’s a lot of interesting names that, we’ll see their desire to re-sign certain guys who are glue guys in the locker room.”
Rodgers also recalled his handful of days at the NFL combine back in 2005, and how it taught him a lesson about how the things that one thinks will never happen have a way of occurring.
“‘I think all the teams were great, except for Green Bay. That was a really tough interview. They were just kind of grilling me but it’s alright. I mean I’m never going to play there anyway, they’re drafting 24th,'” Rodgers said, recalling his thinking at the time. “So be careful saying never.”
