Following the surprising decision by Bruce Arians to retire as head coach, the Buccaneers and new head coach Todd Bowles agreed to an entirely new contract. Bowles was under contract as defensive coordinator for another two years, but Tampa Bay will be giving him an entirely new contract that was agreed upon for five years at his new position.

Todd Bowles contract details

“Buccaneers are doing away with the remaining two years on Todd Bowles’ defensive coordinator contract and are giving him a new five-year, head-coaching contract,” stated ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The decision to promote Bowles from within the organization appears to have been decided once Arians informed the team of his decision to retire, but his hiring was pending due to the team needing clarification on a specific rule set by the NFL. Once the hiring was ruled to be okay, Bowles was offered the position and a new contract for his work with the team.

With Tom Brady’s return to the team, the Buccaneers are still one of the strongest teams in the NFC and are expected to make a deep playoff push. While Bowles is no stranger to this team and their personnel, the new expectations in his role as head coach will certainly be worth watching as the season develops. Having a veteran quarterback like Brady will certainly ease his transition.

“I am appreciative of the Glazer family and Jason Licht for having faith in me to take on this role, and to Coach Arians for his support and guidance over the past four decades,” read Bowles’ official statement on his hiring. “Tampa has become home for my family, and we are excited to remain part of this community for years to come. As an organization, we have all the pieces in place to continue the winning standard that has been established here in recent years. I am eager to get started with our players, coaching staff, and front office in preparation for the 2022 season.”
