Colt McCoy is entering his 12th season in the NFL, so he’s likely seen his fair share of locker room pranks.

On Saturday, which happened to be Arizona starting quarterback Kyler Murrary’s birthday, McCoy was part of a clever prank spearheaded by Cardinals quarterbacks coach Cam Turner.

Like many NFL players and professional athletes, McCoy was asked to send a video to a die-hard Texas Longhorns fan who also happened to play quarterback.

According to ESPN, McCoy denied the initial request, so the supposed fan paid double to ensure he would get that special message from the Longhorns’ legend. At that point, McCoy obliged.

Colt McCoy and the Cardinals quarterbacks react to the prank

“I wanted to reach out and tell you happy birthday, man,” McCoy said in the Cameo message. “I know you’re a quarterback, too, love the Longhorns. I just want to wish you good luck in training camp. Stay humble this season. Stay great. Be a leader. And, most importantly, today, enjoy your birthday, man. It’s special. God bless. See ya.”

The hilarious part?

ESPN summarized the entire prank below.

“In honor of Murray turning 24 on Saturday, Cardinals quarterbacks coach Cam Turner bought a video message from Colt McCoy through Cameo, a site that enables people to pay celebrities to record personalized messages” ESPN staff writer Josh Weinfuss said. “Turner said the birthday boy’s name was Buddy and poked a little fun at the rivalry between Murray’s Oklahoma Sooners and McCoy’s Texas Longhorns.”

The Cardinals video staff caught the reaction on-camera and posted it to social media. It’s clear both Murrary and McCoy are surprised… and maybe a bit confused.

Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury admitted he knew about the ploy and was nervous in the moments leading up to the special birthday message.

“I was sweating,” Kingsbury said Saturday afternoon. “I was so embarrassed. Yeah, I knew it was coming, and [Murray] didn’t know, but it was well played.”
