The Dallas Cowboys waived rookie receiver Dennis Houston, the team announced Tuesday. The move creates an open spot on the 53-man roster as fifth-year receiver Michael Gallup eyes his return from a knee injury.

Houston played his college ball for Western Illinois and went undrafted this offseason before signing with the Cowboys in May. He played 60 offensive snaps over the first two weeks and caught two passes for 16 yards in the opener.

Dallas has yet to fill the open roster spot. Backup quarterback Will Grier and center Alex Lindstrom were their two weekly practice squad promotions last Sunday, and tight end Sean McKeon is also a candidate for the spot following the injury to Dalton Schultz.

Dennis Houston will be eligible to be claimed off waivers by the other 31 teams over the next 24 hours, but could re-sign to the Cowboys practice squad if he goes unclaimed.

Cowboys hopeful for Michael Gallup return in Week 3

The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly hopeful that wide receiver Michael Gallup will return to game action for their Week 3 matchup against the New York Giants. Gallup tore his ACL in January at the end of last season and has been working towards a return to action as the expected No. 2 receiver in the Cowboys offense.

“Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup (ACL) is trending toward a return next Monday at Giants. ‘We’re going to try to give him a full slate this week’ in practice, coach Mike McCarthy said. Whenever Gallup makes season debut, he is not expected to see his usual workload off the bat,” detailed Dallas Morning News‘ Michael Gehlken.

The news is a major relief to Dallas fans and the banged up Cowboys offense, as Gallup will help spread the field for CeeDee Lamb. The Cowboys offense struggled in Week 1 against Tampa Bay prior to Dak Prescott‘s injury, failing to score a touchdown in the season opener. Last week, Cooper Rush led the Cowboys to two-straight touchdown drives to start the game with a huge lift from Noah Brown — who scored his first career touchdown in the win over Cincinnati.
