The Dallas Cowboys will try out a pair of quarterbacks for their roster, including former Texas A&M and Arkansas quarterback Nick Starkel. Starkel will be at this weekend’s minicamp for Dallas, as he attempts to make the leap to the NFL after three years of SEC experience and two more leading San Jose State.

Cowboys to try out Nick Starkel

“The Cowboys will have quarterbacks Nick Starkel and Terry Wilson at this weekend’s minicamp on a tryout basis,” said ESPN’s Todd Archer. “Starkel was last at San Jose St. after playing at Texas A&M and Arkansas, while Wilson finished at New Mexico after transferring from Kentucky.”

Starkel began his college career as an Aggie being redshirted his true freshman year, but made an immediate impact the following year as a redshirt freshman. He won the starting job for Texas A&M but unfortunately broke his leg in the season opener in 2017. He would return to the field for six games in that season, finishing with 1,793 yards and 14 touchdowns in seven appearances.

He finished the 2017 season with a 499-yard passing performance with four touchdowns against Wake Forest in the Belk Bowl — setting a Belk Bowl record. The next season, current-Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher took over the program and Starkel lost his starting job to Kellen Mond. Starkel transferred out of the Aggies program as a graduate student after the 2018 season.

In 2019, Starkel struggled to find his footing at Arkansas, as he split playing time with Ben Hicks. Starkel appeared to win the starting job early in the season after scoring three touchdowns with 305 yards against Colorado State, but followed up his performance with five interceptions against San Jose State.

Starkel entered the transfer portal for the 2020 season and was recruited by a San Jose State team that was looking for an experienced quarterback. Starkel thrived with San Jose State, posting career highs that season and leading them to a 7-0 record in conference play and a Mountain West Conference championship.
