Dallas Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis left Sunday’s game with an apparent right foot injury. Lewis had to be helped off the field to get to the sideline where the cart was then brought out for him to go to the locker room.

The injury to Lewis came as he made a huge play for his team. With the Cowboys leading 10-6 late in the fourth quarter, the Lions were nearing midfield on a 3rd and 12 attempt. Jared Goff threw for wide receiver Tom Kennedy but was intercepted by Lewis. It was on that play that Lewis suffered his injury.

“Dallas cornerback Jourdan Lewis hurt his right foot on that interception,” CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson said. “You saw he needed a lot of help getting off the field, was carted directly into the locker room. I do not expect to see him back out there. Lewis is a Detroit native, he was named a captain today. Certainly did his job. Let’s hope that he’s okay.”

A third-round pick out of Michigan in the 2017 NFL Draft, Lewis has been with Dallas for the entirety of his NFL career. Through the first five games of the 2022 season, Lewis has 23 total tackles, 16 of which were solo.

Lewis signed a three-year contract extension with the Cowboys in March of 2021, worth a max of $16.5 million. In his first year under the new contract, Lewis had 61 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and three interceptions. Lewis proved his worth and created plenty of reason for optimism this season, according to Cowboys writer David Helman, who explained more ahead of the season.

“It’s fair to say this entire Cowboy cornerback crew had a career outing in Dan Quinn’s first season as defensive coordinator,” Helman wrote. “Like Anthony Brown, Jourdan Lewis didn’t reach the dizzying highs of Trevon Diggs, but there’s no debating that the 2021 season was his best since getting drafted 92nd overall back in 2017. Lewis played 16 games and made 13 starts as the Cowboys’ nickel back, setting career highs for interceptions (3) and pass breakups (11). ProFootballFocus graded Lewis at a decent 62.1 in coverage, with 54 receptions on 81 targets on the year.”

Cowboys fighting through adversity

In Week 1 of the season, Dallas lost quarterback Dak Prescott to a broken bone in his hand. The Cowboys appeared to be in a bad spot for the rest of the season but Cooper Rush then stepped up. The backup quarterback led Dallas to four straight wins before falling last week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dallas entered this week at 4-2 overall. That record has it in third place in the NFC East behind the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles and the 5-1 New York Giants.
