Sean Payton announced he would be stepping away from football on Tuesday, ending his 16 year run with the New Orleans Saints. He stepped into the head coaching role with the organization right after Hurricane Katrina and won a Super Bowl in 2009, solidifying himself as a Saints legend forever.

Even before Payton could hold the official press conference, talks of him becoming the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys began. Fox radio host Colin Cowherd broke it down, saying the move “makes a ton of sense” for both Payton and Dallas.

“Sean Peyton has a home in Dallas,” Cowherd began. “Used to be on the Cowboys’ staff, has relationships there — spends a lot of time there. Jerry (Jones) loves him. I think that would be the No. 1 choice.

“Dallas has a good roster. Now, Sean Peyton has three years left on his contract so the Cowboys would have to trade to get him. But they have a lot of good pieces. By the way, now that Michael Thomas — you don’t know what you’re getting? Amari Cooper. He played at Alabama in the south. You know? Amari Cooper would be a piece you move… Dallas has a good enough roster to make trades. They’re not going to give you Zack Martin and they’re not going to give you Dak (Prescott). And they’re not going to give you Trevon Diggs or Micah Parsons. Everything else, I would put on the table.”

Cowherd went on to say Peyton could be the missing piece for the Cowboys, especially when it comes to the quarterback position. The radio host said he likes Prescott but thinks a new head coach could elevate him to a new level.

“Sean Peyton is the kinda guy that can take a quarterback like Dak and move him half a grade,” Cowherd said. “He’s not going to turn Dak from B to A+. But can he take Dak from this year, B to B+, to A-? In that A class? Absolutely. There’s absolutely no question.”

Payton spent three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys under head coach Bill Parcells. He served as the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach after being the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has also been a fan of Sean Payton and rumors of the two reconnecting have been around for quite some time. For now, it seems as if Payton will take some time off and consider his future before thinking about getting back into coaching.
