The Dallas Cowboys made a move on Friday evening with their most recent signee, former Minnesota linebacker Anthony Barr. The Cowboys placed him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Friday, per Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network. The move gives him some time to ramp up his activity level after he had a long stint as a free agent this offseason. He was spotted at practice on Friday in a jersey and shorts.

Once he’s ready to join the rest of the team, Barr will join a linebacking corps that includes: Micah Parsons, Leighton Vander Esch, Jabril Cox, and Devin Harper.

After multiple months of interest in signing him, the Cowboys made the call to sign Barr. He played eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings after being drafted by them out of UCLA with the ninth-overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Cowboys sign veteran Anthony Barr

“Cowboys are signing former Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr,” detailed NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

The Cowboys had been interested in the veteran linebacker for multiple months according to reports, but as recently as last week it appeared that Dallas was not interested in signing him.

However, Executive Vice President Stephen Jones noted at the beginning of training camp that the four-time Pro Bowler was still a player that the team had interest in bringing in. With Dallas having already begun their training camp in full, some believe the decision was made after getting a first look at how their linebackers looked in camp.

Barr made four straight Pro Bowls from 2015-2018, and accumulating 17.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles and five interceptions over his career so far. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Barr’s one-year contract was worth up to $3 million.

According to the On3 Consensus Rankings for the 2010 cycle, Barr was rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 43 overall prospect in America coming out of Loyola High School (Los Angeles, California).
