The Dallas Cowboys might have lost one of their biggest offensive stars for some time as tackle Tyron Smith suffered a knee injury. Smith collapsed on the ground initially after a non-contact injury, but was able to walk around and left the practice facility under his own power afterwards. The injury appears to be a hyperextended knee, but Dallas will perform further examination to make sure Smith didn’t suffer more severe damage to his knee.

Tyron Smith suffers knee injury

Alongside video of the play where Smith suffered his injury, Dallas Morning News‘ Michael Gehlken explained that another high-profile Cowboys player suffered a hyperextended knee when Jayron Kearse did it earlier this month. Kearse suffered his injury on Aug. 1, but returned quickly to practice. Smith’s injury could have a similar diagnosis, but further examination will take place to determine the extent of his injury.

Smith has been one of the biggest and best stars of the Dallas offensive line, and any injury this late in preseason is cause for concern as the regular season nears. The former All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowler was named to the NFL’s 2010’s All-Decade Team.

An additional report from the practice indicated that Smith walked out of the facility under his own power fully and didn’t appear to have a very noticable limp. An MRI by the team will likely confirm how long, if at all, he could be out.

Smith’s initial exam results

“Source indicates Tyron Smith’s ACL is intact after initial review. More reviews coming in the morning. Perhaps the Cowboys have had some good luck,” explained ESPN’s Todd Archer later on Wednesday night.

The news is a sigh of relief for Smith and the team after the injury scare, and although further evaluation is set to take place on Thursday — it appears that Smith avoided the most dangerous outcome from his knee injury.
