The Dallas Cowboys lost an offensive weapon in Thursday night’s season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gallup suffered a calf injury in the Cowboys’ 29-27 loss to the Buccaneers. He is expected to miss multiple weeks.

“Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports that Gallup injured his calf during the 29-17 loss to the Buccaneers,” Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper said on Friday. “He is expected to miss three to five weeks while recovering from the injury.”

Gallup had a strong first half before his injury

Gallup is the Cowboys’ third receiver behind Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb. On Thursday night, Gallup hauled in four receptions for 36 yards before suffering the injury. Cooper had a monster game with 13 receptions, 139 yards and two touchdowns. Lamb caught seven passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.

The Cowboys could elect to place Gallup on injured reserve, which would open up a roster spot and allow him to return in three weeks.

With Gallup sidelined, other pass catchers could see more opportunities in the coming weeks. Tight ends Dalton Schultz and Blake Jarwin might see more involvement in the offense. Schultz caught six passes for 45 yards on Thursday and Jarwin had three catches for 20 yards. Receiver Cedrick Wilson could also be in line for more involvement. Wilson caught three passes for 24 yards against Tampa Bay.

This season is the fourth year of Gallup’s Cowboys career

Gallup was a third round draft pick in 2018 out of Colorado State. His role has grown over the past couple of seasons in Dallas. As a rookie in 2018, Gallup caught 33 passes with 507 yards and two touchdowns. In 2019, Gallup broke out with 66 receptions, 1,107 yards and six touchdowns. Last season, Gallup had 59 receptions, 843 yards and five touchdowns.

Overall, Gallup has 2,457 yards and 13 touchdowns on his career. In two seasons at Colorado State, Gallup had impressive numbers. He posted 2,690 yards and 21 touchdowns and was a second-team All-American in 2017.
