New York Giants backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor suffered a back injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s preseason contest against the Jets and is questionable to return, the team reported.

Taylor absorbed a big hit from defensive lineman Micheal Clemons but impressively got rid of the ball for a 25-yard completion to tight end Daniel Bellinger. The quarterback landed hard on his back and was down on the field for a few moments. Eventually, he got up and went to the injury tent before later being carted off.

Taylor was expected to enter this season as the backup to Daniel Jones, who is sitting out Sunday’s preseason game. Davis Webb, a sixth-year player out of Texas Tech, entered the game following the injury to Taylor.

Taylor never returned to the game, ending his day 2-of-4 passing for 39 yards and an interception while also rushing one time for 13 yards. Webb filled in admirably in his absence, finishing the game 30-of-38 passing for 202 yards and a touchdown as the Giants lost 31-27.

Set to enter his 12th NFL season, Taylor signed a two-year, $11 million contract with the Giants. He has played for six different teams throughout his career and brings starting experience from his time with the Buffalo Bills. His best statistical season came in 2015, when he passed for 3,035 yards and 20 touchdowns while also adding 568 yards and four scores on the ground. He also led the team to the playoffs during the 2017 season.

Hopefully Tyrod Taylor being kept out the rest of Sunday’s game was simply precautionary, and the injury won’t bother him heading into the regular season. The Jets are scheduled to kick off the year at 1 p.m. ET on Sept. 11 with a matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.
