The Green Bay Packers can’t seem to catch a break as of late. And things appear to be going from bad to worse when it comes to their current wide receiver situation. According to recent reports, after having to be carted off the field, Green Bay veteran wide receiver Randall Cobb is likely to be out for a while.

On Monday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein, head coach Matt Lafleur provided an update on his veteran wide receivers status going forward.

“LaFleur said that WR Randall Cobb is going to be out a while, but said he avoided serious injury. Translation: he will go on injured reserve. He said he’s hopeful that WR Sammy Watkins, who is on IR, can begin practicing this week,” wrote Silverstein via Twitter.

Cobb has had a quiet year for the Packers before going down with an ankle injury in the 27-10 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday. Including his one catch for eight yards against the Jets, he has 18 receptions for 257 yards and no touchdowns.

The Packers’ offense has been scrambling since early on in the off-season to formulate a plan at wide receiver to replace the productivity absent with the trade of all-pro wide receiver Davante Adams. Green Bay picked up a handful of talented wide receivers in the 2022 NFL draft, including the emerging favorite target of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Romeo Doubs. Still, Green Bay has yet to put the puzzle pieces together correctly, courtesy of the injury bug. Aside from Cobb, Allen Lazard, other rookie wide receiver Christian Watson, and offseason acquisition Sammy Watkins have all missed time this season due to injury.

This Cobb injury update is not the news Packers fans wanted to hear when it comes to the wide receiver position. However, given the current situation, it could put a fire underneath the front office to do something Rodgers felt the team should have done last season; pick up current free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
