Jadeveon Clowney returning to Cleveland Browns on one-year deal
Cleveland, he’s back. Jadeveon Clowney is returning to the Browns on a one-year deal, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
“#Browns have agreed to terms on a deal with Jadeveon Clowney source tells me,” Cabot tweeted on Sunday.
Additionally, Cabot added the terms of the deal: “#Browns agreement with Jadeveon Clowney, which I reported a few minutes ago, is for 1 year, $11 million, source tells me.”
While the former South Carolina star has been linked to multiple teams, the smoke was never more prevalent than that of a return to Cleveland. Now, it’s coming to fruition. Last season, Clowney amassed 9.0 sacks, 37 total tackles and two forced fumbles for the Browns.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the two sides came to an agreement last Wednesday, but some i’s needed to be dotted before the deal became official.
“The two sides actually agreed to terms on Wednesday, but needed to finalize a few things before it became official,” tweeted Rapoport.
Continuing, Rapoport added that Clowney wanted to return to Cleveland, so much so he spurned other franchises offering more money and years.
“Clowney wanted to be back in Cleveland. How badly? He turned down $14M to $15M a year offers from other teams on multi-year deals to go back,” revealed Rapoport.
The Browns already had a ferocious defense, but the return of Jadeveon Clowney will be huge for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. As for the 29-year old defensive difference-maker, no long term deal has been reached, but it’s evident he’s enjoying his time in “The Land” after taking another one-year contract with the AFC North franchise.
Deshaun Watson’s lawyer expects to hear from NFL in June or July
Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns are still awaiting a decision from the NFL on the status of new starting quarterback Deshaun Watson. Even though Watson was found not guilty by a grand jury, he could still face NFL punishment if he is believed to have violated the league’s personal conduct policy.
While things have been in a bit of a waiting game for a while now, the Browns could soon be getting answers. According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, Rusty Hardin, Watson’s lawyer, expects to hear something from the NFL in June or July.
“We should know what their position is initially sometime in June, and then everybody will figure out if there’s going to be a hearing about it or can people work things out, or whatever,” Hardin said, via Cleveland.com. “The only thing that’s certain is that they want to try to get everything done this summer — and earlier than later in the summer. Past that, we don’t really have any firm dates or possibilities.”
Hardin went on to tell Cleveland.com that the NFL has done an extensive amount of research and investigation into Watson’s case, and that the league isn’t done with looking into the case.
“This idea that [the NFL] hasn’t aggressively investigated this is totally, totally false as evidenced by the fact he’s already spent three days with them,’’ Hardin said. “They’ve obviously done a bunch of research and done a lot of work themselves and they say need to do some more.”
On Tuesday night, HBO will air an interview with some of Watson’s accusers. Hardin told Cleveland.com that he isn’t quite sure what to expect from that.
“I don’t know what it’s going to be like, but I’m not optimistic,” he said. “I believe they’ll air the accusations of the women without attempting to look behind it to see what kind of merit do they have.”
