Report: Eagles sign QB Jalen Hurts to 5-year, $255 million contract extension
The Philadelphia Eagles signed quarterback Jalen Hurts to a five-year-, $255 million contract extension, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“The Eagles and Jalen Hurts agreed to terms on a 5-year, $255M contract extension that makes him the highest-paid player in NFL history, sources tell me and Tom Pelissero,” Rapoport wrote on Twitter. “Agent Nicole Lynn did the deal, which includes $179.304M in guarantees and a no-trade clause.”
The deal is a piece of history for the Eagles quarterback, who just led Philadelphia to Super Bowl LVII, a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Hurts put up MVP-caliber numbers in 2022, his second year as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. He had 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, six interceptions, a 66.5% completion percentage, 760 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.
Eagles GM Howie Roseman teased a new contract for Hurts in March. He simply stated they wanted to make Hurts the top priority.
“It’s no secret that sometime relatively soon we want to extend our quarterback,” Roseman said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Our whole kind of roster building is going to turn a little bit here from a quarterback on a rookie deal towards hopefully a quarterback on a long-term deal. Not that we have anything done or anything but that’s obviously our goal, is to keep Jalen here for a long time.”
The Eagles once extended former No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz with a big deal but eventually traded him ahead of the 2021 season to make way for Hurts.
It certainly sounded like Hurts is a different type of priority for the Eagles’ brass.
“I think what I said was we want him here long-term,” Roseman said. “He’s going into the last year of his deal and so that’s going to be a priority for us to extend him.”
After a Super Bowl appearance, the Eagles went all in on their former second round pick for the foreseeable future.
The Eagles drafted Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma. Hurts found success with the Sooners and Alabama throughout his college career and was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2019.
