The Packers needed to nail their head coaching hire after parting ways with Mike McCarthy in 2018. After three seasons on the job, it’s evident Green Bay hit a home run with the hiring of Matt LaFleur.
In his first two seasons as coach, LaFleur led the Packers to the NFC Championship. After a tumultuous offseason filled with drama, many wondered if we would see regression in Green Bay. Instead, LaFleur has enjoyed his best season with the Packers yet.
After clinching the No. 1 seed in the NFC, ESPN’s Field Yates revealed an incredible stat regarding LaFleur’s time in Green Bay.
“The Packers are now 39-9 with Matt LaFleur as their coach, as LaFleur has *more* wins than any head coach in his first three seasons in NFL history,” tweeted Yates. “And for the ‘but he has Aaron Rodgers!’ crowd… The Packers were 24-23-1 in Rodgers’ last 48 starts prior to LaFleur’s arrival.”
As you can see, LaFleur has been a revelation for the Packers. While young coaches like Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan have got much of the shine, LaFleur has been dominant. If Green Bay can get to the Super Bowl that’s eluded them the last two seasons, it’ll be impossible to ignore his success any longer.

Furthermore, Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers made history in Sunday night’s 37-10 rout of the Minnesota Vikings. The Packers – who clinched the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in the conference playoffs – also became the first team in NFL history to win at least 13 games in three straight seasons.
Moving forward, the Packers are hoping it ends in a better result than it did the last few seasons. In the 2020 NFL Playoffs, the Packers finished 13-3 and faced the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round, winning 32-18; however, in the next round, they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 31-26. The 2019 season was no different. Green Bay made quick work of the Seattle Seahawks, winning 28-23 in the divisional round, but were unable to get past the San Francisco 49ers.
The Packers have one more game left on schedule thanks to the NFL adding a 17th regular-season game, and while the Packers’ starters figure to be on the bench resting, Green Bay should have no problem as it travels to Detroit to face the 2-13-1 Lions.
