Mike McCarthy recently shared a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse into how the Dallas Cowboys combine past and present when welcoming their rookies.

The third-year Dallas head coach talked about owner Jerry Jones first addressing the new 2022 rookie class.

“We kicked it off and I thought Jerry was tremendous in just laying the groundwork in terms of what’s in front of them with the opportunity,” McCarthy said. “We had some fun with their old uniforms and things like that and acknowledged every one of them, their success in college, but the reality is this is the staring point of what it is to be a Dallas Cowboy and what it takes to be a Dallas Cowboy.”

Mike McCarthy then shared a unique tradition involving combining the rookie’s video highlights with many of the legends highlights who have played for the Cowboys over the years.

“We have this really cool tradition and history video that our crew puts together, and it’s kind of funny because we transition through all these highlights throughout Dallas Cowboys history, and near the end, you have all these Hall of Famers speaking on what it means to be a Dallas Cowboy and the video ends with the rookies and their highlight tapes,” McCarthy said.

“So I was joking with them and said, ‘you guys haven’t even taken a snap yet and you’re in a highlight tape with the greatest Dallas Cowboys in team history.’”

The legal process is still occurring with Kelvin Joseph regarding his possible involvement in a fatal shooting taking place in late March. The Dallas Cowboys’ second-year cornerback has been cleared of being the actual shooter but an investigation is still ongoing as offseason workouts begin.

Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy was the latest from within the organization to comment on the situation after the first day of rookie minicamp. He said the Cowboys wanted to make sure they had an internal in-depth conversation on what was the best course of action regarding Joseph. In the end, he thought supporting the cornerback was the best course of action.

“I understand the concern, and I just want you to know that when the situation occurred, we had a lot of internal conversation that was really in-depth,” McCarthy said. “Based off the information that we’ve been given, we felt it was important to support him.”

As for how the legal investigation would impact Joesph on the field, McCarthy would only comment on what the cornerback has done this offseason. Nothing about the future was mentioned by the head coach.

“He’s been here every day and he’s having a very productive offseason so far,” said Mike McCarthy.
