Aaron Rodgers is back, so it only makes sense star wide receiver Davante Adams would return to the Packers. To ensure he’ll be in Green Bay next season, the Packers franchise-tagged the former Fresno State star. However, that’s not going to work for Adams.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Adams has informed the Packers he isn’t playing on the franchise tag.

“Packers star WR Davante Adams has informed the team he won’t play on the franchise tag, and the sides remain far apart on a long-term deal, per sources,” tweeted Rapoport. “It’s all coming to a head. Something has to give.”

As you can see, the news is troubling for Packers fans who believe they’re ready to capture a Super Bowl. Continuing, Rapoport added some more color regarding the situation.

“The Packers got some very good news when Aaron Rodgers decided to return to Green Bay for next season and beyond, not so much with the situation regarding star wide receiver Davante Adams,” Rapoport said on Good Morning Football. “Sources say that Adams has informed the Packers that he will not play on the franchise tag that he was given for the 2022 season. The two sides remain far apart on a long-term extension.

“Just based on the business of this — based on negotiations and talks and how things are going — this relationship is not in a great place. Considering that the start of free agency is upon us, the tampering window starts later today and free agency begins later this week — something has to give. This situation — which has been boiling under the surface — is coming to a head. Going to be interesting to see what movement there is. The Green Bay Packers and Davante Adams, and how this gets resolved. If this gets resolved. But certainly nothing good here between Adams and the Packers.”

The connection between Rodgers and Adams is the most lethal in the NFL. If the Packers want to win the Super Bowl next season, they’ll need Adams to join the team with their star quarterback. If not, their chances are severely hindered.

Moreover, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero revealed that Adam’s doesn’t exactly need to be in a rush.

“Davante Adams isn’t obligated to attend #Packers minicamp, training camp or anything else until he signs his franchise tender,” tweeted Pelissero. “He could show up Week 1 and still collect the full $20,226,600. So this could take a while.”

While the two sides remain far apart, Davante Adams and the Packers both have motivation to get a deal done. Time will tell when the two sides come to an agreement.
