The Miami Dolphins are progressing toward a trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, according to the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain. The report suggests the deal could be completed this week, with time to spare before the NFL’s trade deadline.

Miami has been linked with Watson since rumors surfaced this summer the star quarterback wanted out. However, the pending legal proceedings and ongoing battle with the Texans front office have put off negotiations. It now appears both sides are ready to talk as the Nov. 2 deadline approaches.

According to previous reports, Texans general manager Nick Caserio asked interested teams for three first-round draft picks and two second-round picks. Watson also has a no-trade clause, giving him final say.

Deshaun Watson remained on the Texans roster throughout the preseason and over the first six weeks of the regular reason but has not been active. Even after an injury to starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor, Houston opted for rookie quarterback Davis Mills over the disgruntled star.

A potential move promises to displace second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has struggled with injuries and inconsistent play over his first two seasons. Whether moved to the rebuilding Texans, another quarterback-needy team or kept on as a backup, the trade offers a hiccup in the young quarterback’s once promising career.

Previous trade demands

The Texans originally placed a hefty price tag on their star quarterback.

“Sources tell Yahoo Sports the Dolphins have emerged as the frontrunner in trade discussions with the Texans for QB Deshaun Watson,” Charles Robinson said this summer. “The Texans are seeking 3 first-round picks and 2 second-round picks in negotiations, according to a team that dropped out of trade talks.”

Multiple teams engaged in trade talks for Watson around the league. At least three teams were also in serious discussions at some point, but Watson holds some power with his contract.

In light of Watson’s offseason accusations of sexual assault, teams are looking for protection in potential trades. Recent reports indicate he could miss the entire 2021 season, even if traded.

“Prosecutors have yet to present the case — at least in full — to the grand jury.” NFL insider A.J. Perez added. He also said there is “some hope” the grand jury will have its decision in October. However, not only has the grand jury not seen all of the evidence, but “there are some indications that investigators are still gathering info.”
