The Packers are expected to make a major move regarding cornerback Rasul Douglas. According to a report from Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, Green Bay is bringing back Douglas.

“The Green Bay Packers are expected to retain veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas in free agency, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly,” reported Wilson. “Douglas and the Packers have mutual interest in extending their working relationship following an outstanding season, per sources.”

Last season, Douglas joined the Packers via free agency during the season. He made an immediate impact on the franchise, and became a staple in their secondary. Now, the star defensive back is expected to reap the rewards of his effort.

The Packers already extended pass rusher Preston Smith, and Aaron Rodgers is of course returning to the franchise. Now, Rasul Douglas is the latest domino to fall as the Packers build a Super Bowl caliber team.

Report: Packers agree to huge extension with defensive star

Preston Smith is getting paid. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the former Mississippi State star and Green Bay have agreed to a huge four-year extension.

“The #Packers have agreed to terms with pass-rusher Preston Smith on a 4-year extension worth $52.5M in new money, source said,” tweeted Rapoport. “He gets over $65M over 5 years in all with a chance to make $71M. He gets $14M in year 1. So, one Smith brother sticks around.”

Since joining the Packers prior to the 2019 season, Smith has been reliable as anyone. The star defender has never missed a game, and he’s performed when on the field. In his time with the Packers, Smith has accumulated 136 total tackles, 25.0 sacks and three forced fumbles in three seasons.

Additionally, Rapoport mentions that Smith’s extension will help the Packers lower their salary cap for the 2022-23 season.

“Aaron Rodgers’ new deal drastically lowered his cap number for 2022. Preston Smith is expected to do the same,” added Rapoport.

Now, Preston Smith will be sticking around as Green Bay looks to capture a Lombardi Trophy.
