The San Francisco 49ers and star receiver Deebo Samuel have finally agreed to a new contract extension, ending a lengthy contract dispute. Samuel’s new deal is a three-year extension worth $73.5 million maximum, with $58.1 million guaranteed.

Deebo Samuel signs contract extension

“The 49ers and star weapon Deebo Samuel worked for months and [gets] it done,” stated NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. “He lands a huge deal — 3 year extension worth $73.5M max and $71.55M total. The guarantee is $58.1M. He’ll be 29 years old entering the last year of his deal with the potential for another massive one.

“This was not easy. From a trade request to totally rebuilding the relationship. But agent Tory Dandy and 49ers brass deal with it all. In the end, no trade. Samuel gets paid. And everything works out.”

One of the NFL’s biggest stars is finally ready to begin the 2022 season in earnest, as the former South Carolina star has received a contract that he’s willing to sign. Samuel’s position and value to San Francisco made for a complicated contract negotiation, as his usage in the 49ers running game has been well beyond what a normal wide receiver would do on most teams.

As he arrived for training camp despite the ongoing contract dispute, Samuel’s decision was reportedly heavily influenced by his desire to be a more traditional wide receiver. The team and Samuel were making progress on his deal prior to the weekend, allegedly giving Samuel his desired role with the team and lessening his usage on run plays up the middle of the field.

The extension puts Samuel’s pay in line with other blockbuster receivers around the league as he becomes the 11th wideout to get $20 million this season. At the time of his contract’s announcement, it was not made available if there were any clauses in his contract that limit his usage as a running back for San Francisco.
