The Seattle Seahawks have elevated newly signed running back Adrian Peterson from the practice squad, per Pro Football Talk. He will play in Sunday’s contest against the San Francisco 49ers.

Seattle signed Peterson earlier this week to help a backfield decimated by injuries. Starting running back Chris Carson has not since Oct. 3 and was placed on injured reserve for a neck injury. Alex Collins, Rashaad Penny and Travis Homer are all listed as questionable for the 49ers.

Peterson made his 2021 season debut on Nov. 7 with the Tennessee Titans against the Los Angeles Rams. After three weeks in Nashville, the Titans waived the former Minnesota Vikings star.

The running back brings a decorated NFL career to Seattle that spans 15 seasons. A former MVP and seven-time Pro Bowler, the longevity of his career is something most players at his position don’t see. He ranks fifth all-time in career rushing yards and his 2,097 yards in 2012 are the second-most ever in a single season.

Peterson played his college ball at Oklahoma, bursting on to the scene as a freshman. He set the Sooners single-season rushing record in 2004 after totaling 1,925 yards and 15 touchdowns. He injured himself near the end of his junior year at OU, needing just 152 yards to become the career rushing leader. He did not play another game for the Sooners, entering the NFL draft that offseason.

After entering the year with high expectations, Seattle has fallen well short. Carson wasn’t the only key injury, as quarterback Russell Wilson missed three games with a finger injury. They currently sit at 3-8 and last place in the NFC West.

Perhaps the addition of Adrian Peterson can provide a much-needed boost to the Seattle Seahawks offense. However, even then, they have a lot of ground to make up.

Kickoff between San Francisco and Seattle is set for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
