Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence called out an online report that he had lost more than half of his signing bonus last year. Stories began spreading on Tuesday that he had lost roughly $15 million of his $24 million rookie deal bonus by investing in cryptocurrency — a story that began with misinformation according to Lawrence.

Trevor Lawrence did not spend rookie bonus on crypto

“Did y’all confuse my FTX signing bonus with my NFL one? Carry on…” was all Lawrence had to say about the matter while responding to a story published by Barstool Sports.

The story that circulated through the internet on Tuesday stemmed from a USA Today report that was confused by the language used by Blockfolio, a company that signed Lawrence to an endorsement deal last year.

“This partnership marks the first endorsement deal ever in which a significant signing bonus has been paid entirely in cryptocurrency,” read their official statement on Lawrence’s deal with the company.

Their use of the words “signing bonus” was solely in regards to their payment for his endorsement and had nothing to do with his actual NFL signing bonus. The language got mixed up and without a dollar amount beside the release, reports used his NFL signing bonus amount that was publicly available.

As Lawrence himself explained, the amount of money paid (and potentially lost) via cryptocurrency was entirely part of his partnership with Blockfolio — having nothing to do with his $24 million NFL bonus. Lawrence likely was driven to respond to the comments being made about him because they began to drift into criticisms of his personal character, stating that he “gambled away” his NFL money and was a sign of poor decision making.

The original report that Lawrence responded to has since added an edit to their report, stating that the facts weren’t all there originally — while still making a comment on their problem with cryptocurrency.
