The Dallas Cowboys beat the Los Angeles Chargers on a 56-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein with time expiring. On a drive starting from their own 13-yard line, the Cowboys drove down the field to give their kicker a chance to win it.
Cowboys win with Greg Zuerlein field goal
After scoring a game-tying field goal with less than four minutes in the game, the Chargers kickoff was returned to the Dallas 23-yard line. On the return, Dallas committed a holding penalty that pushed them back to the 13-yard line.
Quarterback Dak Prescott then led the Cowboys down the field into long field goal range, where Greg Zuerlein redeemed his mistakes in week one against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Cowboys ended the game without Dak Prescott scoring a touchdown, but with running back Tony Pollard having a huge game with 109 yards and a touchdown. In a close game, turnovers kept Dallas in the game with two interceptions including a redzone takeaway.
Zuerlein committed to playing better
The game-winning field goal comes as a huge relief for Zuerlein following a disappointing week one performance against the Buccaneers. Zuerlein finished 3-for-5 on field goals and 2-for-3 on PATs in the Cowboys 31-29 loss last week.
Following that game, Zuerlein knew just how costly his missed kicks proved to be. He did not make any excuses for himself, instead blaming himself for the Cowboys’ season-opening loss in Tampa Bay.
“No excuses,” Zuerlein said via Around The NFL’s Kevin Patra. “If I’m out there, I should make the kicks. No excuses… I know we played well enough to win. If I did my job, we win that game. I feel bad for the guys in there that played their ass off, and I didn’t hold up my end of the deal. If the team that’s that good, returning every player after a Super Bowl victory, and we’re right there, I just have to do my job.”
