The Kansas City Chiefs head into battle against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in Las Vegas, but whether they’ll have Kadarius Toney as part of their arsenal has yet to be determined. On Monday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid refused to specify one way or another whether the former first-rounder will play in Super Bowl LVIII after missing the last six games.

“We’ll see. He’s been practicing,” Reid said. “We’ll have to see if he’s up.”

Though the wide receiver is reportedly healthy at this point, Reid could potentially decide to sit him anyway. It’s a critical decision for the Chiefs head coach who witnessed Toney have an impact just last year when he scored a five-yard touchdown against the Eagles.

Toney’s had a rough time of late as criticism piles on with each game he misses. During the regular season, he posted 27 receptions for 169 yards and one touchdown in 13 games.

His stats since the Giants drafted him out of Florida three seasons ago haven’t quite lived up to his first-round billing. He’s accumulated 82 catches on 115 targets in 32 games played. Toney has 760 total receiving yards and three touchdowns over his first three seasons.

Toney speaks out on Conference Championship game absence

The Chiefs took heat in the last round of the playoffs when they listed Toney out due to a hip injury, and also personal reasons. Before kickoff in the conference championship game, however, the former Gators star claimed in an Instagram Live video that the team was lying about his injury status.

Following the 17-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens, Reid said Toney’s injury was, in fact, real and that the team did not file an erroneous injury report. Reporters then asked Toney to clarify his Instagram remarks on Monday, which was the opening day of Super Bowl LVIII events.

“A lot of footage got chopped up in the release, so it made it look like I was attacking the ones I love the most,” Toney said. “I would never attack the Chiefs; I didn’t say anything about the Chiefs. I was referring to the Giants fans in my comments. Was referring to them which I shouldn’t have.

“I just wanted to go out there and kinda like you said, get my message across as far as my injury, but shouldn’t have done that at the end of the day. I’m a man and I can accept my mistakes just like I accept my wins. I’m just moving past it now.”
