The initial assessment of Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson’s injury came in on Sunday afternoon. And per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, he has a AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder (right). He’ll still need to undergo an MRI to further evaluate things. The X-rays performed on Sunday were negative.

Richardson was taken out of Sunday’s game vs. the Tennessee Titans game with an apparent right shoulder injuryGardner Minshew stepped in to replace the injured rookie.

Richardson was scrambling on a play before being tackled awkwardly. He immediately began tapping his throwing shoulder and was taken to the locker room for further evaluation.

He was officially ruled out for the remainder of the game.

The Colts led the Titans 10-6 before the injury. Richardson began the game 9 of 12 passing for 98 yards before being taken out.

The Colts ended up defeating the Titans 23-16 on Sunday.

The former Florida Gators standout has missed time already this year in concussion protocol, as he was sidelined for Week 3’s overtime victory against the Baltimore Ravens. He returned the following week to lead the Colts to another overtime matchup, this time in a losing effort against the Los Angeles Rams.

Indianapolis selected Richardson with the No. 4 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, despite many questioning how he would perform in the National Football League. Richardson was regarded as one of the most athletic quarterback prospects of all time, standing at 6-foot-4, 244 pounds. However, he struggled to make plays consistently in the passing game during his time at Florida.

Richardson has silenced his critics so far in the NFL, showing off the athleticism and arm strength that made him an intriguing quarterback prospect. Still, his natural physicality has done him in for a second time during his young NFL career.

This year, he’s completed 56.9% of his passes for 479 yards, while tossing in three touchdowns and one interception. As a runner, he has 23 carries for 131 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

There’s no question that Richardson’s rushing ability is a big part of his game. But that’s something he will have to balance going forward in order to avoid being a regular on the Colts’ injury report.

Being physical is “part of my game and part of my style,” Richardson told reporters last month. “I like to hit people first and try to put them in a pickle so they have to make a decision .… I’m going to try to play a little bit smarter and understand that I can’t take big hits if I’m trying to play the whole game.”
