Ausar Thompson found himself in the same breath as his brother as a potential top pick in this year’s NBA Draft. That turned out to be the case as the Detroit Pistons selected him with the No. 5 overall pick Thursday night.

Thompson and his brother, Amen, forewent their remaining high school eligibility at Pine Crest School in Florida to play for Overtime Elite. He started out with Team Elite in 2021-22, but joined the City Reapers alongside Amen this past year. Thompson averaged 16.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting 48% from the field, including a 29.8% clip from three-point territory.

Thompson played a key role in the last two OTE championships. He helped lead Team Elite to the mountaintop in 2022 and took the City Reapers to the top, as well, as he won his second straight Overtime Elite Finals most valuable player award. In fact, this past year, he earned the Overtime Elite MVP award for his efforts.

That type of success was part of what made Thompson an intriguing prospect in NBA Draft circles. His pre-draft process was interesting, especially after he backed out of a workout with the Indiana Pacers, according to reports.

Before joining Overtime Elite, Ausar Thompson had some big-time college interest. He held offers from multiple programs, including LSU and Alabama, before ultimately deciding to take a different route with his post-high school career to prepare for the NBA.

What NBA Draft experts are saying about Ausar Thompson

Thompson’s numbers were impressive during his time with Overtime Elite and he put himself at the forefront of the lottery conversation. He has a chance to be instant impact in the NBA because of his versatility and his ability to do work on both sides of the ball.

“Thompson’s highlight-reel offensive plays get most of the attention, but the wing’s defense might be where he makes the biggest impact out of the gate,” Rotowire’s evaluation of Thompson said. “He’s hyper-athletic and versatile, which may allow him to defend all positions but center, especially when the other team runs small. He’ll jump in passing lanes and pick pockets to start fast breaks, and he’s a great shot-blocker for his size.

“Offensively, he’s best with a head of steam toward the basket, whether that be on or off the ball. When he has the ball in his hands, he’s an excellent passer who has demonstrated patience and precision.”
