Former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley has landed with a new team. Per a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Bears have signed the ex-Nittany Lion to the practice squad.

News of Chicago’s signing comes as Bears starting quarterback Justin Fields deals with a dislocated thumb injury. He sustained the injury in Sunday’s 19-13 loss to the Vikings.

Fields popped his thumb back into place but struggled to grip the football. He eventually left the game, turning the offense over to Tyson Bagent.

McSorley spent the first three seasons of his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens. He had a one-year stop with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022 and spent time with the New England Patriots during the 2023 preseason.

For his career, McSorley has appeared in nine games and made one start, which came during the 2022 season with the Cardinals. He has thrown for 502 yards with a touchdown and five interceptions.

Prior to arriving in the NFL, McSorley was a standout quarterback at Penn State. He was a second-team All-B1G selection for three straight seasons (2016-18).

McSorley owns several Penn State records, including: wins (31), passing yards (9,899), passing touchdowns (77), total offense (11,596), touchdowns responsible for (107), consecutive games with a touchdown pass (34), 300-yard passing games (10), and plenty more.

Justin Fields ‘doubtful’ for Bears in Week 7

There’s a good chance Chicago has to move forward without its starting quarterback for at least a week. Bears head coach Matt Eberflus painted a bleak outlook for Fields to play in Week 7, with the QB listed as “doubtful” for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

“It’s really going to come down to grip strength,” Eberflus said, via Ian Rapoport.

Prior to his exit, Fields completed 6-of-10 passes for 58 yards with an interception. He also rushed for 46 yards on eight carries. Tyson Bagent replaced the former Ohio State standout following the injury.

Bagent threw for 83 yards and a pick while completing 10-of-14 throws. He also had a rushing touchdown. The Bears lost a 19-13 decision to the Vikings to fall to 1-5 on the year.

Fields, a first-round selection by the Bears in the 2021 NFL Draft, is in his third season in Chicago. After Sunday’s loss to Minnesota, he now owns a 6-25 record as a starting quarterback in the league.

The Bears and Raiders (3-3) go head-to-head at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday with coverage on FOX.
