Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick detailed the challenges the New England Patriots faced while trading for Randy Moss. While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, the former Patriots coach used an interesting analogy while talking about the trade.

“The most interesting trade was the Randy Moss trade,” Belichick said. “We’ve been trying to trade for Randy Moss for two months.” Belichick went on to say that the trade was “like childbirth.” Moss was playing for the Oakland Raiders at the time, and Belichick said he talked to the late owner Al Davis about acquiring Moss.

“I talked to Mr. Davis and I said, ‘Are we going to make this deal or not?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, we’ll do it for your fourth,'” Belichick said while also mentioning that the Patriots picked seventh in the fourth round at the time. He then said that the team had to get Moss in for a physical and re-negotiate his contract. “And Mr. Davis said, ‘Well that’s your problem. You want to trade for him?'” Belichick revealed.

After Belichick spoke to Davis, he reached out to Moss who hung up the phone as soon as Belichick started talking. Belichick tried to call Moss again and the Hall of Fame wide receiver hung up again because he thought he was being pranked.

Bill Belichick finally got Randy Moss

Belichick then said he finally got a hold of Moss and said the Patriots were trading for him. Moss flew to New England the next day to get a physical done his contact re-worked. The star receiver was with the Patriots from 2007-2010 and helped the team have an undefeated regular season and reach the Super Bowl in his first year.

Belichick is not with an NFL team for the 2024 season after leaving the Patriots last year. The thought was Belichick was going to be hired as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, but the team went with Raheem Morris instead.

Belichick was the Patriots head coach from 2000-2023. While in New England, Belichick led the Patriots to six Super Bowl wins and was named AP Coach of the Year three times. His success with the Patriots led to him being named to the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team, the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team and the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.
