The Dallas Cowboys hit the field – the baseball field – on Wednesday night for the annual Reliant Energy Home Run Derby. As it has during the team’s offseason workout program, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb‘s presence was sorely missed. Lamb, who is waiting on a contract extension this offseason, did not make the event, but his teammates advocated for him in his absence.

Second-year Cowboys receiver Brandin Cooks was particularly vocal about what he hopes the team accomplishes with the former first-round pick.

“The guy is a freak,” Cooks said of Lamb. “He deserves everything that is coming his way, and I hope he gets every single dollar that he can and [be] the highest-paid receiver in the league because he’s the greatest receiver in the league. No doubt.”

Eagles, Lions reset WR market for Lamb

Last month, the Philadelphia Eagles extended wide receiver A.J. Brown to the tune of $96 million – resetting the market. He’s now locked down through the 2029 season, and set to make $96 million over three seasons, which is the highest-ever averaged at the position. He will also receive $84 million guaranteed, another historic high for an NFL wide receiver.

The Detroit Lions also ponied up for Amon-Ra St. Brown in April. They inked the former fourth-round selection to a four-year deal worth up to $120 million with $77 million guaranteed.

Meanwhile, Lamb, who had more receiving yards and touchdowns than Brown and St. Brown last season, is still waiting on his deal. He decided to make a statement by not joining the team for offseason workouts, which, according to Dak Prescott, is of little to no concern. He’s currently set to play the 2024 season on his fifth-year option for $17.991 million.

“I know he’s not in town right now, but we’ll get it in, trust me,” Prescott said on Wednesday. “No worries there. I know what he’s doing, I know how he’s preparing. All confidence in the way he’s preparing.”

After leading the league this season with 135 receptions, Lamb told teammate Micah Parsons on his The Edge podcast that he wants to be “one of” the top-paid receivers in the league, if not the highest-paid.

“I can’t give you no numbers right now, but I’ll tell you this, [I want to be] one of the top paid receivers for sure, if not the [highest-paid receiver],” Lamb said, via Jon Machota. “That’s always the goal.”

This season, Lamb posted 1,749 receiving yards (second in the league) and 12 touchdowns (third in the league) on 135 receptions (first in the league). His connections with Prescott came in fourth in NFL history between a QB-WR duo.
