Brocky Purdy has no intention of giving Patrick Peterson any additional fuel entering the season opener between the 49ers and Steelers. The San Francisco quarterback provided a very political answer when asked about the Pittsburgh defensive back’s recent comments.

In the All Things Covered podcast, Peterson recently predicted that he’d haul in an interception off Purdy in the opener. When asked about the comment, Purdy didn’t say too much.

“I don’t really know what to say about that. He’s a good player,” Purdy said. “Patrick Peterson’s a great player. Grew up watching him and everything. I was obviously from Arizona, he played for the Cardinals and stuff, so.

“Yeah, it’s the competitive nature of football, so, we’ll see.”

During the podcast, Peterson praised Kyle Shanahan’s offensive scheme and said Purdy doesn’t make a lot of mental errors on the field. However, he also said that the 49ers have some tendencies that should allow him to pick off a pass.

“There is some tell signs out there that tells us what plays we’re gonna get from those guys in certain situations,” Peterson said. “When I get my pick Sunday we’ll talk about it.”

Peterson joined the Steelers in the offseason, inking a two-year deal with Pittsburgh. He spent a majority of his career in Arizona before spending the last two seasons in Minnesota.

And the defensive back knows a thing or two about interceptions. Over the course of his career, he’s picked off 34 passes. So, if Purdy isn’t careful, he could give up a big play to the veteran DB.

Brock Purdy not turnover-prone in rookie season

For a quarterback who started the year as third on the depth chart and got pushed into the spotlight due to injury, Purdy handled the pressure quite well. Most importantly, he didn’t turn the ball over.

So, perhaps Peterson’s prediction of an interception is a touch premature.

Purdy was a perfect 5-0 for the 49ers as a starter last season. He completed 67.1% of his passes for 1,374 yards and 13 touchdowns with four interceptions. In the postseason, he didn’t throw a single pick.

Those are pretty good numbers for any quarterback. They are even more impressive for a rookie who started the season at the No. 3 spot on the depth chart.

Sunday’s matchup between Pittsburgh and San Francisco already had plenty of intrigue. But now there’s a new element that will keep fans tuned in.
