The NASCAR Cup Series is racing in Mexico City for the first time ever. It comes during a contentious political moment in the United States. Bubba Wallace addressed the media today ahead of practice and was asked about the current situation in Los Angeles and other cities in America.

As NASCAR heads south of the border this weekend, back home in the United States, headlines are dominated by the ongoing ICE raids in major cities and civil unrest in response to those raids. Bubba Wallace was asked about NASCAR’s support for the Latino community back home amid the tense political situation.

“Yeah, so, to be honest with you, I haven’t paid attention to the outside world and the news and stuff like that,” Wallace responded. “I think for us and the image that we have been trying to portray as a sport, at least, for the last five years, when everything was kind of flipped on its head, was making this [sport] inclusive for all. Making it special for everyone to attend our sport and to have fun and cheer on their favorite driver.

“And like I mentioned earlier, I couldn’t be more proud and excited for [Daniel] Suárez and understanding that he’s put in a lot of work with NASCAR to make this all happen and to make it special for all of us. And to see NASCAR support his decisions and needs and wants to make sure everybody is safe. Not just the drivers, but fans and family and friends, all of this. Everybody is safe, and they feel important just as much as the drivers do. I think a lot of credit goes for Suárez, but a lot of credit goes for NASCAR for supporting those actions.”

Bubba Wallace ready to go for NASCAR Mexico City race

When Bubba Wallace walked into the media room at Mexico City, he had on a luchador mask. At first, he planned to keep it on, but quickly took it off when he realized how difficult it was to breathe. But the 23XI Racing driver is embracing the culture and atmosphere.

Road course races haven’t been Wallace’s best. However, he has had bright spots here and there throughout his career. When he has a fast car, he is able to make great runs. He fought for the pole with his teammate, Tyler Reddick, earlier this year at COTA.

Wallace believes he has great support from the Latino community. Already, he has noticed that he is being recognized by track officials and fans. This could be a great weekend for Wallace on a track that not many drivers are familiar with.

A big weekend for NASCAR. Bubba Wallace is hoping to have a big weekend himself. Wet-weather tires are likely to be used. All of these small details will go into how the race plays out. If he sticks with Reddick again, we all might be surprised by Wallace this weekend.
