Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin doesn’t know who he will be catching passes from this season. Nonetheless, he plans on building chemistry with both potential options.

“The biggest thing is communication. I felt like whenever there’s a lack of communication, that’s when you see bad plays show up between quarterbacks and receivers. Like you said, we don’t know who the quarterback is gonna be. But I think from my perspective, I just got to make sure that our chain of communication between Baker [Mayfield] and Kyle [Trask] is as clear as it can be,” Godwin said on “The Rich Eisen Show.”

After Tom Brady retired at the end of last season, the Buccaneers were left with a gaping hole behind center. At 28, Mayfield has the obvious upper hand in experience. The Oklahoma product has amassed 16,288 passing yards and 102 touchdowns in six NFL seasons with the Browns, Panthers and Rams.

On the other hand, Kyle Trask, 25, has only been active for two games over a span of two seasons, getting his most action in the team’s season finale at Atlanta last year, in which he completed just three passes for 23 yards. However, Trask’s peak is unknown.

Before Godwin can worry about any quarterback reaching their peak, he must focus on building a strong foundation with them.

“Playing quarterback is a hard position. And I don’t know if everyone fully understands how much they have to know. But, I don’t want to be a reason to add any extra stress to their lives… I take care of that by knowing what to do and communicating with them to see how they see it.

“Then, we just put it together on the field, and it’s not like it’s going to be something that happens overnight, but it’s going to be something that we developed over the course of training camp. As long as we’re working in the same direction, we’re working on the same thing. I think we’ll be good,” Godwin said.

Godwin will be a reliable option for whichever quarterback emerges at the end of training camp. The 6-foot-1 talent recorded 104 receptions for 1,023 yards and three touchdowns last season. He will aim to pick up his second Pro Bowl this season, last making the event in 2019.
