Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson ruled out vs. Texans with concussion
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson exited his squad’s Week 2 matchup against the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon with a potential concussion, according to the team, and is now officially ruled out. Richardson exited the field and went to the tent before heading to the locker room for further concussion evaluation.
Prior to leaving the field, the young QB accounted for both of his team’s first-quarter scores against the Houston Texans.
Richardson’s first touchdown scamper came on the opening drive of the game, an 18-yard run to give the Colts a 7-0 lead after the PAT. He followed that up with a 15-yard touchdown run to extend their lead to 14-0. It was on the second score that he banged his head.
Richardson, the Colts’ fourth overall selection in April’s NFL Draft out of Florida, has now compiled four touchdowns (three rushing) in the first five quarters of his career.
Taking his place in the Colts offense is backup quarterback Gardner Minshew. Minshew came briefly into last week’s game before his former squad, the Jaguars, wrapped up the win.
Pat McAfee on Richardson: ‘This dude needs to be healthy’
It was a 31-21 loss for the Colts in Richardson’s first start. Despite that, there were a lot of positive things to build on. Richardson was decisive throughout the game. He rushed for a touchdown and threw for another. He also led the team in rushing. Those positives took a backseat, however, after the QB suffered a bone bruise.
ESPN host Pat McAfee pointed out that the hit at the end of the game wasn’t the only big hit that Richardson took during the game. There was another one early in the game where he was slow to get up.
“Next play, next play,” McAfee said. “Safety comes shooting through. He stands right in the pocket, throws the ball around the guy, and takes a massive shot right to his face. It’s like, ‘Okay, he’s good.’ Then, at the end of the game, he gets hit again, he’s hurt, it’s like, ‘This dude needs to be healthy because he can be electrifying and he also has the greatest spike in football right now.’”
