The Commanders have decided Landon Collins no longer has a future in Washington. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the former Alabama star and the NFL franchise are parting ways after three seasons.

“Sources: The Washington #Commanders are expected to release star defender Landon Collins after the two sides did not agree on a restructured contract,” tweeted Rapoport. “Collins will now hit free agency to cash in again.”

Moreover, Washington inked Collins to a huge contract when he hit free agency in 2019. After spending the first four seasons of his career terrorizing the Commanders as a member of the New York Giants, the franchise jumped at the opportunity to steal the safety away from their NFC East rival. However, Collins never reached the All-Pro level he was play at in New York with Washington.

Additionally, injuries became the story of the former Alabama star’s time with the Commanders. Collins never played a full season with the franchise, and his role was severely diminished as time went on. Now, Washington is cutting their losses.

Some have hypothesized that the style the three-time Pro Bowler plays is better suited at the linebacker position. If a savvy defensive coordinator gets his hands on Collins, perhaps the former Alabama star can rejuvenate his NFL career.

Nevertheless, Landon Collins is a free agent for the second time in his NFL career. While his contract won’t exceed the one Washington handed him, the former All Pro will be looking to become a household name once again at his next stop.

Moreover, Landon Collins is part of a slew of change in Washington. On Wednesday, the Indianapolis Colts opted to trade quarterback Carson Wentz to the Commanders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Colts are getting “a package of picks” from Washington, including two third-round picks, per the report.

Washington was looking for a new signal-caller following another seven-win season under Ron Rivera. The Commanders looked far and wide for a new quarterback this offseason, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“The Commanders called on every QB and end up with Carson Wentz from the #Colts in exchange for mid-round picks,” Rapoport shared on Twitter. “They weren’t going to wait for Jimmy G, didn’t land Russell Wilson. Now end up with Carson.”

The Colts will get this year’s third-round pick from Washington and next year’s third-round pick as well, which could convert to a second-round pick depending on incentives.

The former Philadelphia Eagles starter will likely take over for Taylor Heinecke in Washington. Heinecke finished 19th in the league in passing yards in 2021 with 20 touchdowns, 15 interceptions. Meanwhile, Carson Wentz finished 18th with 3,563 passing yards for the Colts. He had a 62.4% completion percentage this season while throwing 27 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.
