Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson leaves Day 1 of training camp practice on cart
As the Dallas Cowboys began training camp practices on Wednesday, one defender was carted off the field with an unspecified injury. According to reports from media on the sideline, safety Donovan Wilson went into the injury tent then took a cart off the field.
According to NFL Network reporter Jane Slater, the Cowboys decided to get X-rays done on Wilson’s right calf.
Wilson is a leader on the Cowboys defense. He signed a three-year deal worth up to $24 million before he was due to hit the free agent market this offseason.
Drafted in the sixth round in 2019 out of Texas A&M, Wilson was previously playing on a four-year, $2.65 million rookie deal.
He led the team in tackles in 2022 with 101, a career-high for the Cowboys safety. He also had five sacks, two forced fumbles, a recovery and one interception. During Dallas’s postseason run, Wilson had an additional 20 tackles, including a tackle for loss.
After finishing third on the defense in tackles in 2020, Wilson had shoulder and groin injuries. He missed eight games in 2021 due to injury.
Eric Scott notches first INT of Cowboys training camp
Cowboys rookie cornerback Eric Scott Jr. had the first interception of training camp. The former Southern Miss standout snatched up a ball that was bobbled by wide receiver Simi Fehoko.
Scott has fired Dan Quinn up with his willingness to rise to the occasion so far since the draft.
“When you see a guy wanting the moment to go compete, like, you know, I’m balling my fists up and saying, ‘I ain’t leaving here,’ that’s what I’m looking for specifically for the rookies,” Quinn said. “That kind of mindset and attitude is really what it takes for a young player to assert themselves into these moments because that responsibility is really to say, ‘Hey, man, can we count on you when it’s there?’
“Them learning to do that early on, that’s a big deal, knowing that like the amount of work that goes into to say, ‘I’m down for this challenge.’ I’ve seen that from Eric so far.”
Scott, now sporting No. 37 for the Cowboys, took reps for Stephon Gilmore when he was out during offseason practice. He also earned copious praise from head coach Mike McCarthy at the time.
“Eric Scott’s been impressive since he came in on his 30 visit,” McCarthy said. “The humility that he showed, did a great job in his interview. His physical traits and abilities speak for themselves.
“In terms of first impressions, he’s top of the class. He’s earned the opportunity to get those reps.”
