With two games remaining in the regular season, the Dallas Cowboys are inching closer to making a huge deal with star quarterback Dak Prescott. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Cowboys could offer Prescott a sum in his next deal that would make him either the highest-paid quarterback in the league or at least among the top-paid.

“He’s going to get between $55 and $60 million,” Schultz told FS1 on Thursday. “We’ve already seen Joe Burrow get that 55 number. Dak Prescott has an opportunity to reset it. Both sides are highly motivated. Don’t forget, he has a no-trade and no-tag clause. He has all the leverage. There’s no question that Dak and Dallas, Jerry want to get that done.

“He’ll be right in that class. Over the last eight games, 25 total touchdowns, and two picks. He’s playing like an MVP. He has an opportunity to win a Super Bowl. And he is a Dallas Cowboys quarterback in the same sentence as Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. We don’t see great quarterbacks go to free agency. That’s not going to happen.”

This season, Prescott is fifth among the league’s starters in passing yards with 3,892. He’s first in touchdown passes with 30 and he has seven interceptions, which is nearly half as many as the other QBs that lead the league this season. Last year, he ended the regular season with a career-high 15 interceptions. The Cowboys have two more games remaining on the schedule – at home against the Lions and on the road against the Commanders.

Jones: ‘Dak’s the best he’s been’

Jerry Jones had glowing reviews of Prescott this week, even coming off of a second consecutive loss.

“I think Dak’s the best he’s been in his career,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “I think if you’re going into this part of the season in the NFL and your quarterback is playing this well, you’ve got an outstanding chance to come home happy.”

Prescott’s final year of his contract will cost the Cowboys $59.4 million, total, against the cap. He’s set to receive a $5 million roster bonus in March and his base is $29 million. The DMN noted that the Cowboys are set to spend $67.6 million on their quarterbacks next season. That’s an NFL high.

On top of adding years to his contract, the Cowboys likely will restructure the final year of Prescott’s deal to create some cap space. They also may need to release players and not sign as many free agents this offseason.
