There’s a new voice in Dak Prescott‘s ear, and it happens to have a Pittsburgh accent. The Southern man from Louisiana is starting to get used to Mike McCarthy’s northern accent as the duo prepares to run the Cowboys offense together in 2023.

Speaking to reporters after Thursday’s OTA practice, Prescott opened up about what it’s like having McCarthy, not Kellen Moore, calling plays.

“You hear that accent a little bit more when he’s calling these plays,” Prescott said, via Dallas Morning News. “He called one out there today and I looked back and I go, ‘Was it the right one?’ Yeah, it was. It’s just that his accent was tough to hear.

“No, it’s been fun being able to work with him in that light, everyday hands-on. It’s exciting. It’s refreshing. I know he’s enjoying it, getting back into football, head first into the film and what we’re doing. It’s exciting, for sure.”

McCarthy, Prescott smooth out play-calling chemistry

The connection between McCarthy and Prescott will be more critical than ever as the former Packers coach goes all-in on his first year calling plays in Dallas. He hasn’t done so since his days in Green Bay. However, Prescott is a veteran at this point and it’s not his first time adjusting to major change.

McCarthy isn’t changing the language of the offense and the two are spending more time together than ever to make sure there are no issues in communication.

“More than in the past,” McCarthy said of how much time they’re spending together. “Frankly, not enough, it’s never enough. I’m here now instead of in a QB meeting. But absolutely, it’s important. I’m not worried about the football part of it, I’m able to get in that, it’s more about calling the game.

“We have a thing called PCP, the purpose of the play call, I think when they know and continue to anticipate what’s going to be called, that’s a connection the play-caller and the quarterback need to have.”

As the Cowboys continue through OTAs, McCarthy is keeping the communication lines with Prescott wide open.

“As we broke practice [today], he said, ‘Go look at everything we put in and make sure we’re running the things you like and the things we’re good at. If it’s something you’re a little iffy about, let’s get it out. Let’s master what we’re great at,’” Prescott said. “Just having that clear communication, being able to work with him day in and day out, it’s new. It’s refreshing. It’s fun for both of us.”
