Report: Cowboys DE Tarell Basham expected to miss next game versus Bengals

The Dallas Cowboys could be without backup defensive end Tarell Basham next week against the Cincinnati Bengals. ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler shared that Basham could be out one or more weeks after he suffered a thigh injury.

“Cowboys DE Tarell Basham ‘hopefully back in 1-2 weeks’ from thigh injury, source said, but nothing firm yet,” Fowler wrote.

Basham was one of several Cowboys players to exit the season-opener versus Tampa Bay early. Starting quarterback Dak Prescott, safety Jayron Kearse, and left guard Connor McGovern all suffered various injuries.

McGovern departed in the first quarter with ankle injury. After the game, Jerry Jones revealed the starting left guard had a high-ankle sprain. Kearse left the stadium on crutches and Prescott has to have surgery on Monday for a ligament injury in his thumb.

Last season for Dallas, Basham had 39 tackles, including 3.5 sacks and three tackles for loss.

Prescott reveals optimistic news on thumb injury

Dak Prescott provided a silver lining to his injury, even if he’s still going to miss multiple weeks. According to Prescott, his injury could’ve been much worse, as he told the media after the loss.

“I was told it was much cleaner than it could have been,” Prescott said, via Michael Gehlken.

Todd Archer of ESPN shared the initial report that the former Mississippi State quarterback could miss up to eight weeks with recovery time.

“Dak Prescott is expected to have surgery Monday on a right thumb injury and miss 6-8 weeks, according to multiple sources,” tweeted Archer. “He will meet with the team’s hand specialist on Monday, but sources said he will have a pin and plate inserted to stabilize the joint.”

Additionally, Archer says that Prescott could go on injured reserve, and may not be able to return until November. 

“He will likely be placed on injured reserve but will be eligible to return later in the year,” added Archer. “If he follows the 6-8 week timeframe, he could return as soon as Oct. 30 vs. Chicago or Nov. 13 at Green Bay following the bye.”
