Dallas Cowboys move key defensive back to COVID-19 list
The Dallas Cowboys will be without a key member of its secondary when they host the Washington Football Team on Sunday.
Jourdan Lewis has been moved to the COVID-19 list. The Michigan product has played in 14 games this season with 11 starts. A cornerback, Lewis has 53 total tackles this season with 1.5 sacks and three interceptions. Next to Trevon Diggs, Lewis has helped build Dallas’ defense into one of the top in the nation.
The surge in COVID-19 cases across the nation has hit the NFL, too. Earlier this week, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, running back Tony Pollard and running back Corey Clement were all limited.
Dallas clinched a playoff berth on Thursday night with the 49ers’ loss to the Tennessee Titans. The last time the Cowboys made the playoff was back in 2018.
Washington enters Week 16 with a 6-8 overall record.
Cowboys star sets new interception goal for remainder of season
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs has an interception goal for the final three games of the season. After securing his 10th interception of the year in Week 15, Diggs inched closer to the league record of 14.
In an interview Thursday, the second-year pro revealed the number he is eyeing.
“If I could get another 10, that would be great, in these last 3 games,” he joked. “I don’t know. I’m just going to go out there and put my best foot forward and see what I come up with.”
Diggs has been the top corner in the NFL all season, impressing with his eye-popping numbers. His 10 picks are three more than second-place J.C. Jackson of New England. Diggs ranks second in the NFL in passes defended with 19.
A second-round pick out of Alabama in 2020, Diggs has improved greatly in his second season. He started in all but one of the 12 games he played as a rookie, recording three interceptions and 14 passes defended. He matched last year’s interception total by Week 3, recording a pick in each of his first three games.
In all, Diggs recorded seven interceptions through his first six games of 2021. The level of production has decreased in recent weeks, likely as a result of opposing quarterbacks shying away from throwing his way.
His spectacular play thus far earned him his first Pro Bowl selection, with a potential for many more to come. His All-Pro selection at the end of this season seems inevitable as well.
