An insider report from Ian Rapoport on Tuesday sent Cowboys nation and all its critics into a frenzy as he shared that Dallas isn’t currently negotiating with Dak Prescott on a long-term extension. The report suggested that the Cowboys would be fine letting Prescott enter free agency next March when his current deal expires. However, NFL reporter Josina Anderson shared a report from her own sourcing on Wednesday, which contradicts Rapoport who said they’re “clearing a path” for the star QB to test the waters next year.

“Regarding the #Cowboys and Dak Prescott, I’m told the team does intend to work out a contract for their 3x-Pro Bowl quarterback and also has not closed off potential to consummate a deal for him this year, per source,” Anderson shared.

“While there’s currently no offer or imminent talks, the team is not presently charting a path to let Prescott go to free agency, despite some chatter to the contrary, I’m told. Prescott’s entire contract history with the #Cowboys from his rookie deal, tagging, extension and restructures are all macro-indicators of the eventual goal.”

Prescott, who signed a four-year, $160 million deal with the Cowboys in 2021, has a $55.455 million salary cap hit in 2024. Dallas restructured Prescott’s deal last week, converting his $5 million roster bonus this season into a signing bonus, effectively clearing $4 million in cap space. Before the agreement, his 2024 salary cap number was $59.4 million.

On ESPN’s Get Up on Wednesday, host Kimberley Martin suggested it would be best if Prescott found a new home after next season. She believes he’d benefit from the “Kirk Cousins experience.”

Dak Prescott entering Year 9 in the NFL

Prescott, 30, is coming off his best season to date in the NFL, leading the league with 36 touchdown passes. Prescott finished second in the NFL AP MVP Award voting, only behind Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. Dallas went 12-5 for the third consecutive season but failed to win a playoff game. With the former fourth-rounder under center, the Cowboys are 2-5 in the postseason.

Despite the conflicting reporting surrounding the Cowboys’ intentions with the star QB, Jerry Jones was very complimentary this week at the NFL league meetings in Orlando.

“When I think of Dak, he’s one of those in the top paid that haven’t won that I think can,” Jones said. “I think there are a handful or more of quarterbacks playing who haven’t won a Super Bowl that will win a Super Bowl. I think Dak is one of them. I’m firm there.”
