Report: Dallas Cowboys receiver James Washington suffers fractured right foot
The Dallas Cowboys saw one of their first major injuries of training camp happen to receiver James Washington on Monday with a foot fracture. The injury appeared to happen on a play where he was defended by Trevon Diggs near the endzone, with Diggs landing on Washington’s right foot as they went for a pass.
James Washington out 6-10 weeks with foot fracture
Following examination, it was revealed that Washington’s injury will force him to miss roughly two months as they confirmed he fractured his right foot and will require surgery.
“The Cowboys will be without wide receiver James Washington for 6-10 weeks because of a fractured right foot suffered Monday,” explained ESPN’s Todd Archer. “He is scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday in Dallas.”
The injury comes at a very poor time for a Dallas roster rebuilding its receiving depth chart after the departure of talents like Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson this offseason. Washington was brought in from the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency, and was intended to be another experienced weapon for Dak Prescott.
Adding to the difficulty this places on Dallas, Washington was set to have a major part in the Dallas offense as the season began due to Michael Gallup’s availability being in doubt. Washington’s foot fracture is reminiscent of the injury defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence suffered last season, which caused the Cowboys’ star to miss ten games.
Washington is a native of Texas, coming back to play for his hometown team this offseason. He was a second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers and spent four years with the AFC club. There, he was able to catch 114 balls for 1,629 yards and 11 touchdowns.
It didn’t take long for him to impress Prescott with his talent as well, as the quarterback spoke highly of him prior to the start of training camp.
“Obviously just a veteran. You turn on the film and see a contested catch guy,” said Prescott. “He’s got some juice. He can take the top off. Just in the time we’ve had, he’s been very friendly. Very quarterback friendly. He’s running good routes. I’m excited to see him with defenders now.”
