Dallas Cowboys top franchise tag candidates for 2023
The start of the franchise tagging window is on Feb. 21, meaning the Dallas Cowboys have very little time remaining to decide which of their top unrestricted free agents to put under the tag for 2023.
This year’s franchise tagging window runs from Feb. 21 to March 7. The Cowboys have 20 unrestricted free agents to consider, however, there are two main candidates for the tag in 2023.
Tight end Dalton Schultz played the 2022 season with the franchise tag after failing to reach an agreement for a long-term deal. He made $10.93 million on the tag, but it would cost $13.1 million for next season. It’s a significant bump, but still a little below what he would likely fetch on the market.
According to ProFootballFocus, Schultz had more regular-season snaps than any other tight end over the past three years. He also ranks within the top 10 in yards after the catch, yards after contact, and contested catch rate.
In 2022, he finished second on the team in receptions (57) and receiving yards (577). He also added 12 receptions, 122 yards and three touchdowns in two postseason games to go with his five regular season scores.
Cowboys weigh franchise tag options
There are two things, however, going against Schultz getting the 2023 franchise tag. One is running back Tony Pollard. The other is the depth at tight end on the Cowboys roster for 2023.
With Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot, and Sean McKeon on the roster, the Cowboys have to weigh whether or not they can make up Schultz’s production with the younger players.
As for Pollard, it makes more sense for Dallas to go with the injured running back over Schultz, as long as they can make up for his production. Pollard is cheaper – the franchise tag for a running back is just under $10.1 million – and it’s a great way to keep him on the roster without over-committing after his fibula fracture and high-ankle sprain.
Pollard rushed for a career-high 1,007 yards while averaging 9.5 yards per catch on 39 receptions this season for Dallas. He also earned his first Pro Bowl bid.
Once a player signs on the franchise tag, the team can still negotiate a long-term deal until July 15.
The negotiating window for upcoming free agents who haven’t received franchise tag designations begins on March 13.
