The Dallas Cowboys could have not been feeling better after two weeks of the season. Massive wins over the New York Giants and Jets had them sitting with a 2-0 record. Dan Quinn‘s defense was flying in every aspect, potentially being on pace to do something special.

However, everything came crashing down on Thursday when cornerback Trevon Diggs went down with an injury in practice. Following an MRI on his knee, Dallas fears Diggs has torn his ACL according to Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport — both of the NFL Network. If confirmed, he is likely out for the remainder of the 2023 season.

“The #Cowboys fear that Pro Bowl CB Trevon Diggs suffered a torn ACL in practice today, sources tell me and @RapSheet,” Pelissero said via Twitter.

Rapoport added context as to how the injury occurred, happening during a 1-on-1 drill. There was nobody around Diggs at the time, being the dreaded non-contact injury. Just devastating news for the Cowboys ahead of Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

“With Trevon Diggs feared to have torn his ACL in a non-contact 1-on-1 drill at practice today, the Cowboys are looking at potentially losing one of their top defenders,” Rapoport said.

Diggs was voted an All-Pro for his performances in 2021, leading the NFL in 2022. He was named a Pro Bowler the following season, cementing himself as a top cornerback in the league. Dallas even paid him as such, with a 5-year, $97 million contract extension taking place this offseason.

Dallas Cowboys potentially continuing 2023 season without Trevon Diggs

If Dallas’ fear becomes true and Diggs misses the rest of the 2023 season, some switches are going to have to be made in the secondary. David Moore of the Dallas Morning News outlined what the Cowboys could do, suggesting nickel corner DaRon Bland makes the shift to the outside.

“DaRon Bland will now start opposite of Stephon Gilmore,” Moore said via Twitter. “Jourdan Lewis will take over the slot.”

Bland is in his second NFL season and by many around the Cowboys, has been considered a steal of the 2022 Draft. He now has a big job of replacing Diggs opposite of Gilmore.

Lewis has been with Dallas for quite a few years now, being a third-round selection in 2017. He was once considered a starter but an injury kept him out for the majority of the 2022 season. With Diggs’ ACL tear, his role will suddenly become quite an important one.
