Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams will have to sit out six games this season due to a suspension for violating the league’s gambling policy, but his suspension does not preclude him from practicing with the team.

A leg injury will, though. At least temporarily.

Detroit head coach Dan Campbell told reporters on Tuesday that Williams was forced to leave Monday’s practice due to a leg injury and will likely miss a couple days while he recovers.

The injury is not feared to be all that serious, but it will sideline the talented player in the meantime.

On Friday’s session, the team’s first in full pads, Jameson Williams did not participate but was moving well as he went through some light drills with team staff.

Williams has not made much of an impact at the NFL level yet, despite becoming a first-round NFL Draft pick of the Lions in 2022. He was taken with the No. 12 overall pick, but Detroit knew he might take some time to get going as he worked his way back from a torn ACL suffered in college.

The talented first-year player appeared in only six games, recording one catch for a 41-yard touchdown. He was targeted nine times during the season.

He also recorded one 40-yard run during his rookie season.

Jameson Williams began his rookie year on the reserve/non-football injury list as he recovered from the torn ACL. He was able to return to practice in late November and then was activated on Dec. 3, able to play in a few final games down the stretch.

Off the field, Williams was caught up in the league’s crackdown on gambling. He was one of four Detroit players suspended for violating the league’s policy on gambling following a league investigation.

Williams and a teammate were suspended for six games due to mobile betting on a college football game that occurred at a hotel room during a team road trip, in violation of the league’s official policy.

Prior to entering the NFL ranks, Jameson Williams burst onto the scene in 2021 after transferring to Alabama. He had made minimal impact in two seasons at Ohio State but turned into a superstar with the Crimson Tide.

Williams logged 79 catches for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns in his lone year at Alabama.
